Lung Function Testing (Spirometry)
— Doctor-Led Respiratory Assessment —
Who this assessment is for
Lung function testing (spirometry) is useful when we need to assess how well your lungs are working and whether airflow limitation may be contributing to your symptoms.
It may be appropriate for:
Patients experiencing shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, or persistent cough.
Individuals with symptoms triggered by exercise, cold air, allergens, or respiratory infections.
Patients with suspected or known asthma.
Patients being monitored for COPD or chronic bronchitis.
Individuals with a history of smoking or vaping.
Patients wanting assessment of breathing performance, exercise tolerance, or recovery after illness.
Spirometry provides objective information about lung function and helps guide diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing monitoring.
What to expect during your visit
Your assessment is performed in-practice using our medical-grade Vitalograph spirometry system.
Your appointment includes:
A review of your respiratory symptoms, medical history, and relevant risk factors.
Clear explanation of the test and what we are assessing.
Baseline spirometry testing to measure airflow and lung function.
Repeated measurements to ensure reliable and clinically meaningful results.
Pre- and post-bronchodilator testing where clinically indicated.
Doctor interpretation of the results in the context of your symptoms and examination findings.
Guidance regarding treatment, monitoring, or further investigations if required.
The test is non-invasive, safe, and usually completed within a short appointment.
Why lung function testing matters
Respiratory symptoms can sometimes be subtle, intermittent, or difficult to interpret based on symptoms alone.
Spirometry helps us:
Move from symptoms to objective measurements.
Assess for conditions such as asthma and COPD.
Investigate unexplained cough, wheezing, or breathlessness.
Monitor response to treatment over time.
Assess exercise-related breathing symptoms.
Provide reassurance when lung function is normal.
Because spirometry measures how much air you can breathe out and how quickly you can do it, it gives valuable insight into how effectively your lungs are functioning.
A thoughtful, evidence-based approach
At Peak Family Practice, we combine accurate respiratory testing with careful clinical assessment in a calm and supportive environment.
Our medical-grade spirometry system provides reliable, real-time measurements while allowing us to coach patients through the test properly, helping ensure accurate and clinically useful results.
