Men Over 40

Three Health Checks Worth Talking About

At Peak Family Practice, we encourage men over 40 to take a proactive approach to their health, focusing on three important areas: prostate health, cardiovascular health and skin cancer prevention.

1. PROSTATE HEALTH – DON'T WAIT FOR SYMPTOMS

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men, with the risk increasing with age. When detected early, it is often highly treatable.

Early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms. A simple blood test, known as a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test, can help identify men who may need further investigation. However, PSA screening has benefits and limitations, which should be discussed with your doctor.

At Peak Family Practice, we offer prostate health assessments and PSA screening, taking into account your age, family history and individual risk factors.

2. CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH – KNOW YOUR NUMBERS

Heart attacks and strokes remain major causes of illness and premature death in men. Many risk factors, including high blood pressure, raised cholesterol and diabetes, can go unnoticed for years.

From the age of 40, it's sensible to assess your cardiovascular risk by checking your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, weight and lifestyle. Early detection and lifestyle changes can significantly reduce your risk.

At Peak Family Practice, we offer comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessments and exercise stress ECG testing, where clinically appropriate, to help assess your heart health.

3. SKIN CANCER – KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR SKIN

Living in Cape Town means plenty of sunshine, but also increased exposure to harmful UV radiation and a greater risk of skin cancer.

Men often overlook suspicious moles and skin lesions, particularly on their backs. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, but early detection can make a significant difference.

Watch for moles that change in size, shape or colour, or lesions that bleed, itch or fail to heal.

At Peak Family Practice, we offer Mole Mapping, allowing us to photograph and monitor moles over time, helping identify suspicious changes that may need further investigation.

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR HEALTH

Turning 40 doesn't mean you're getting old, but it does mean it's time to think more seriously about your long-term health.

Don't wait until something goes wrong.

Book a men's health assessment at Peak Family Practice in Hout Bay. We can help you understand your risks, choose appropriate screening tests and take practical steps towards a
healthier future.
