Stay Well This Winter

Flu Vaccination:

A Simple Step to Stay Well This Winter

by Dr Tegan Child-Villiers

As we move into the colder months in South Africa, we begin to see a predictable rise in seasonal influenza (“flu”). While often thought of as a routine winter illness, flu can have a meaningful impact on day-to-day life, affecting not only your health, but your work, family, and overall wellbeing.

Flu vaccination remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce this impact.

What is influenza?

Influenza is a contagious viral infection that spreads easily through respiratory droplets when someone coughs, sneezes, or even speaks in close proximity.

In shared environments such as offices, schools, and households, this can lead to rapid spread, with multiple people becoming unwell over a short period.

Why does flu matter?

For many people, flu causes several days of significant symptoms, including:

  • Fever and chills

  • Body aches and fatigue

  • Headache

  • Sore throat and cough

Most people recover within two weeks, but the illness can still result in time off work, disrupted routines, and reduced productivity.

In some cases, flu can lead to complications such as chest infections, worsening of chronic conditions, or hospitalisation.

Who should consider flu vaccination?

Flu vaccination is recommended for most people, and is particularly important for:

  • Young children from 6 months of age

  • Adults over the age of 60

  • Pregnant women

  • People with chronic medical conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease)

  • Individuals working in shared or high-contact environments

  • Anyone wanting to reduce their risk of illness during winter

Vaccinating these groups helps protect both the individual and those around them.

What are the benefits of flu vaccination?

The flu vaccine is updated each year to match the most common circulating strains.

Benefits include:

  • Reduced risk of getting flu

  • Milder illness if infection does occur

  • Lower risk of complications

  • Less time off work or school

  • Reduced spread within families and workplaces

Even when the vaccine does not completely prevent infection, it often significantly reduces the severity of illness.

Is the flu vaccine safe?

Yes. Flu vaccines are well-established and widely used around the world.

Most people experience no or only mild side effects, which may include:

  • Soreness at the injection site

  • Mild fatigue or headache

  • Low-grade fever

These symptoms usually resolve within 1–2 days.

Importantly, the flu vaccine cannot cause influenza.

When is the best time to get vaccinated?

In South Africa, flu season typically peaks between June and August.

Vaccination is best done before the season begins, ideally between April and May, allowing your body time to build protection.

Other ways to reduce your risk

While vaccination is the most effective preventive measure, a few simple habits can also help:

  • Wash hands regularly

  • Cover coughs and sneezes

  • Avoid close contact with people who are unwell

  • Stay home and rest if you are sick

  • Keep indoor spaces well ventilated

Small, consistent actions can make a meaningful difference.

A simple, proactive step

Looking after your health is often about small, thoughtful decisions. Flu vaccination is one of those, a simple step that can help you stay well, protect those around you, and move through winter with fewer disruptions.
