Botox: Myths vs Facts
Anti-Wrinkle Injections:
Myths vs Facts
by Dr Megan Buckle
Anti-wrinkle injections (otherwise known as Botox) are one of the most talked-about aesthetic treatments - and also one of the most misunderstood. Between social media, celebrity culture, and word-of-mouth stories, it’s easy to feel unsure about what’s true and what’s not.
Here at Peak Family Practice we believe in informed decision-making. Let’s separate the myths from the facts.
Myth 1: “Anti-wrinkle injections will make my face look frozen”
Fact:
A frozen or expressionless look is most often the result of over-treatment or poor technique - not the treatment itself. When anti-wrinkle injections are used conservatively and placed correctly, they are intended to reduce excessive muscle movement rather than eliminate expression.
At Peak Family Practice, the aim is to soften excessive movement while maintaining a refreshed, natural appearance.
Myth 2: “It’s only for older people with deep wrinkles”
Fact:
Anti-wrinkle injections are commonly used both preventatively and correctively.
In younger patients, small doses can help prevent dynamic lines from becoming permanently etched into the skin. In more mature skin, treatment can soften existing lines and prevent them from worsening.
There’s no “right age” - only the right indication for you.
Myth 3: “Botulinum toxin is toxic or unsafe”
Fact:
Botulinum toxin type A has been used safely in medicine for decades - not only for aesthetics, but also for conditions such as migraines, muscle spasticity, jaw clenching (TMJ), and excessive sweating.
When administered in appropriate doses by a trained medical professional, it is safe, well-studied, and temporary. Like all medical treatments, it should be prescribed thoughtfully and administered responsibly.
Myth 4: “Once you start, you can’t stop”
Fact:
Anti-wrinkle injections are not addictive, and stopping treatment does not make your skin worse.
If you stop, muscle activity simply returns to normal over time, and your face gradually goes back to how it would have looked without treatment. Many patients choose to continue because they enjoy the softer, more rested appearance - not because they have to.
Myth 5: “Everyone gets the same treatment”
Fact:
There is no one-size-fits-all approach.
The number of units required depends on:
facial anatomy
muscle strength
areas of concern
and your personal goals
Two people receiving treatment in the same area may need very different doses. A proper consultation and facial assessment are essential to achieving natural results.
Myth 6: “Anti-wrinkle injections will make my lips look big”
Fact:
Anti-wrinkle injections do not add volume to the lips.
Anti-wrinkle injections work by relaxing targeted muscles to soften lines caused by facial movement. They do not fill, plump, or enlarge tissue, and they do not change lip size.
The concern about “big lips” usually comes from confusion between different types of aesthetic treatments. Anti-wrinkle injections and volume-adding treatments work in fundamentally different ways, and one does not cause the effects of the other.
The bottom line
Anti-wrinkle injections should be subtle, considered, and tailored to the individual.
At Peak Family Practice, we focus on careful assessment, conservative treatment, and honest guidance - so you can make a decision you feel comfortable with.
